We are loving the watercolour-inspired trend at the moment, with some beautiful gowns gracing the catwalk, high street and now, the red carpet.
The trend is all about watery colours and patterns that blend together to create a floaty and feminine look that is perfect for the summer season. It has recently been featured throughout light and summery dresses that use chiffon and layers to create a lot of movement.
However, most recently, the watercolour style has been given a more structured take, with Cate Blanchett rocking a heavy and intricately printed gown on the red carpet at Cannes.
The 45-year-old actress attended the premiere of the romantic drama Carol at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (May 17th) in a stunning Giles Decon dress.
Cate was apparently so taken with the gown when she spotted it in Paris on Saturday (May 16th) that she decided on a last-minute dress change. She swapped her Armani choice for the hand-painted, heavily-structured silk number, which was designed to mirror the colours and movement of the sea.
The dress looked absolutely breathtaking as Cate ascended the Palais des Festivals stairs, showing that she had definitely made the right choice.
To allow the gown to be the star of the show, the Blue Jasmine star kept her makeup soft and subtle, while her hair was swept up in a chic updo. The only jewellery she wore was a pair of diamond stud earrings, which had a beautiful flower shape, and a matching statement ring.
If you want to follow in Cate's footsteps and wear the watercolour trend, we recommend choosing similar jewellery. Something like this 9ct White Gold 1/2 Carat Diamond Star Stud Earrings and Pendant with Chain Set could be incredibly effective.
The white gold will work with the cool colours featuring in watercolour ensembles, while the shape will contrast the swirling patterns that make this trend so beautiful. The pieces also work together or separately, making them incredibly versatile.
What did you think of Cate's last-minute look?
