We should all take good care of our skin. Whether you want to reduce the signs of ageing, control breakouts or just keep it looking fresh, a solid skincare routine is a must.
While what you put into your body can affect your skin – which is why you should include plenty of water, fresh fruits and vegetables into your daily diet – you can help it look its best with the right products.
Now is the perfect time to create a luxury skincare routine, as the change in the weather can affect your skin. Cold and wet weather throughout autumn and winter can leave skin unbalanced and feeling sensitive if you don't look after it.
Here's how to create the best routine for your skin:
Determine your skin type
Knowing what skin type you have – dry, oily, problem or combination – and what issues you want to address is the first step to finding the right products for you.
After all, you don't want to use something that is designed for oily skin if your face gets dry, as this will remove too much oil and make the problem worse.
Remove makeup every day
One of the biggest issues skin faces nowadays is people not removing makeup at the end of the day. Skin needs to breathe and replenish itself while you sleep, which it can't do if you go to bed with a layer of makeup on.
Sleeping in your makeup also causes blocked pores, blackheads and breakouts, none of which are a great look.
Use a good makeup remover on your whole face at the end of the day to get rid of your makeup and refresh skin.
Thoroughly cleanse twice a day
Even though you've removed your makeup, you still need to cleanse your skin to help get rid of dirt and excess oil completely. Find a face wash that totally suits your skin – never use hand soap on your face!
You should wash your face morning and evening for the best results.
Don't scrub too regularly
You shouldn't scrub your skin every day as this can stretch your pores and actually mark your skin. Instead, you should stick to exfoliating no more than two nights a week.
Scrubbing your face lightly at night means it is given a chance to recover before you put makeup on, which will reduce sensitivity and stop your face going shiny partway through the day.
Deep clean once a week
You can also use a deeply cleansing face mask once a week to help keep skin really clean and reduce the chances of blocked pores. These can also be a great way to relax, so why not run a bath and enjoy a good soak while wearing your face mask?
Moisturise every day
After washing, exfoliating or deep cleaning your skin, it is important that you moisturise it. This helps to put moisture back into your skin that can be lost through washing, which stops your skin from producing too much oil to overcompensate.
Even oily skin needs to be moisturised, as it could help to balance your skin and address the problem.
Allow moisturiser to soak in for at least 10 minutes before applying makeup to get the best results.
