The stunningly beautiful larimar is undoubtedly one of the rarest gemstones on earth. Why? Well it’s only found in one place on earth – the Dominican Republic. The mine itself is found high up on an old volcanic mountain and is only one square kilometre.
Geology lesson – Larimar was born from volcanic activity, and the stone is formed when hot gases push crystallized minerals up though volcanic ‘tubes’. In order to mine and excavate the stone miners must identify these tubes and dig deeper and deeper into old volcanoes. Amazingly enough Larimar remained undiscovered until 1916 but was rediscovered in 1974 when a local artisan found it. The story goes he named the gorgeous stone “Larimar” for his daughter Larissa and Mar the Spanish word for sea.
Hard working – It’s a pretty hard gemstone and varies between 5-7 on the Mohs scale with the darker blue stones ranging closer to 7. The great thing about this is that its durability is perfect for the jewellery trade – we breathe a sigh of relief! Make sure you check out our Larimar collection.
Hocus Pocus – Larimar was thought to be the stone of lost Atlantis. The Popular psychic Edgar Cayce, believed Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a fragment of the sunken mythological city and hence Larimar being the mystical stone. It is also believed to have healing properties and to bring peace and tranquillity!
Regardless of what you believe – just a gemstone, or something more whimsical, its cool beauty can’t be ignored! And plus it’s not every day you can wear something so rare. Tell us what you think?
